Description:
The figurative element in this work references Judith Leyster’s painting “The Serenade” (1629). Seen at the Rijksmuseum, I was impressed by its small but powerful presence, the expressive brushstrokes and how Leyster portrayed light. She was the first woman in the Western world to be officially recognized as a master painter, to have her own workshop and take on pupils. The symbolic meaning of lust and love associated with the lute in 17th century painting also appealed to me.
