"Wonderfully badly done" is The most famous woodcut of all time, drawn with a brilliantly surreal and fantastic Renaissance hand by Dürer in 1500. The artist never saw the animal but was based on descriptions of a letter. Alfonso de Albuquerque, governor of the Portuguese Indies, received it as a gift from Sultan Muzafar II and decided to pay it an homage to the King of Portugal Manuel I. The Portuguese sovereign in turn wanted to give it to Pope Leo X. Unfortunately, during the journey the animal perished in a tragic shipwreck. Manual photogrammetric drawing from an original copy.
