References: “Zelfportret” (1943-1944) by Charley Toorop; “Cypresses and Two Women” (1890) by Vincent van Gogh; and the keys to the city of Amsterdam symbolically given to Emperor Napoleon in 1811.
This work is a part of the "Delicate Sensibilities" series, a series of paintings created during a residency at Nieuw en Meer. They were an initial reaction to the surroundings and influences I encountered living in Amsterdam and the Netherlands. The sources of ideas for paintings vary, ranging from the research of Dutch art history and impressions of Amsterdam through collages and photos to a post-modern approach of blending painterly movements.
